The annual U.N. climate conference is taking place in Madrid, after violent social unrest in Chile forced a last-minute change of venue to Spain.
The talks unfold against a backdrop of rising public concern about climate change and a surge in protests, led by young people, calling on governments to step up action to rein in global warming and protect their citizens from its impacts.
The meeting aims to serve as a launchpad for countries to strengthen the climate action plans they submitted for the 2015 Paris Agreement, by the end of 2020.
