A new life in the Netherlands: a Syrian refugee family’s story

In Syria, they were a typical middle-class family, living in the capital Damascus. Hanadi had two jobs - an office worker in a government institution and a private mathematics tutor. Walid ran a shop in the city centre. When civil war broke out in 2011, Hanadi was reluctant to leave. But when her uncle and a friend were killed in bombing, she changed her mind.

“We were living happily and comfortably, visiting each other without being fear, going to restaurants and attending weddings or parties without fear, but our life changed a lot when the war started”, says Hanadi, “There was a permanent fear for our children and ourselves.”
