MIAMI, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Paula strengthened into a hurricane on Tuesday as it moved northwest toward Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Paula, the 16th named storm of the busy 2010 Atlantic hurricane season and the ninth hurricane, was packing top sustained winds of 75 miles (120 km) per hour, making it a Category 1 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of intensity.

It was located about 230 miles (370 km) south/southeast of Cozumel, Mexico.
