BAMAKO, Jan 5 (Reuters) - A man threw an explosive device at the French embassy in Mali's capital on Wednesday, wounding two people, witnesses said.

A spokesman for the French Foreign Ministry confirmed there had been an explosion, but gave no further details.

No one has claimed responsibility for the incident, though al Qaeda cells and Tuareg rebels operate in the region.

Two witnesses who were near the embassy at the time of the explosion said a man hurled an explosive device over the embassy wall and fired a gun at the embassy gate. They said two people were wounded and taken to hospital.

A Reuters witness saw three bullet holes in the gate.

Another witness said the man was apprehended by police as he attempted to run away after the explosion.

A police spokesman was not immediately available to comment. (Reporting by Tiemoko Diallo; Editing by Richard Valdmanis and Jon Hemming)
