KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Jan 7 (Reuters) - An explosion inside a public bathhouse in Afghanistan's southern Kandahar province on Friday has killed 12 civilians and wounded 17 others, a provincial spokesman said.

"We do not know whether it was a suicide attack. All we know at this stage is that there was an explosion inside the bathhouse and we are investigating," said Zalmai Ayoubi, spokesman for the governor of Kandahar province.

Ayoubi said the target had been a border police commander who was inside the bathhouse at the time of the attack, which took place in the town of Spin Boldak on the Pakistani border. The condition of the commander was not known, he added. (Reporting by Ismail Sameem; Writing by Jonathon Burch; Editing by Daniel Magnowski)
