(JAKARTA, INDONESIA) – Global child rights and humanitarian organisation Plan International is closely monitoring the impact of the 7.9 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of West Sumatra Island in Indonesia.

“We have local partners who are on the ground and operational in areas that could be affected by an earthquake or tsunami. We are in communication with them, and are on standby to launch an emergency response if required,” says Mingming Remata-Evora, Country Director for Plan International Indonesia.

“Plan International is communicating with government agencies and humanitarian organisations. Our Emergency Response team is closely monitoring the situation and will be prepared to respond, if needed,” says Evora.

Plan International has pre-positioned emergency supplies that can be distributed to communities in urgent need if requested, including emergency shelter kits and other urgent humanitarian supplies.

Plan International is also coordinating with the National Disaster Management Authority, and in-country humanitarian organisations.

Plan International has decades of experience responding to emergencies, both in Indonesia and around the world. In emergencies, Plan International places the safety and protection of children as central to any humanitarian response. We will also focus on providing urgent relief in affected communities, including potentially emergency shelter, food, water and sanitation supplies, and enacting core child protection protocols and providing support services to children.

Plan International has been working in Indonesia since 1969. Areas that may be affected by today’s earthquake include parts of Indonesia where Plan International was part of a massive emergency response to the 2010 earthquake on Mentawai Island and following the massive 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.
