COLOMBO, June 5 (Reuters) - One soldier was killed and thousands of people were evacuated after an explosion on Sunday at one of Sri Lanka's largest ammunition dumps, where the army stores heavy weapons near the capital Colombo, officials said.

Explosions at the army camp at Salawa continued for more than five hours and the blasts were heard more than 12 km away, local residents said. The cause was not immediately known. (Reporting by Ranga Sirilal; Writing by Shihar Aneez; editing by Adrian Croft)
