MORE than three million people risk going hungry in South Sudan as the full cost of the country’s conflict becomes clear, warns Plan International.
Nearly 900,000 villagers have fled fighting in the world’s newest nation, some to neighbouring countries including Uganda.
Aid workers for children’s charity Plan are helping thousands of survivors with life-saving food, water and protection.
“The political situation is still speculative,” says Roland Angerer, Plan’s Regional Director in Eastern and Southern Africa, despite ongoing peace talks.
“Some analysts project turbulence until the next election in 2015. Seasonal floods and further violence will amplify human suffering.”
Concerns are growing for women and children, who have borne the brunt of clashes.
Conditions are particularly poor in Awerial where families have fled fighting in Bor, Jonglei State.
Plan has deployed an international team to help aid workers already on the ground with their emergency response.
“We’re focusing on immediate concerns of child protection, water, sanitation, food and education,” says Mr Angerer.
“Many children have been separated from families and caregivers which makes them more vulnerable to violence, trafficking and abuse.”
