Assistance to CAR and Sudanese refugees, and Host communities inside Chad - TCD141
Appeal Target: US$ US$ 899,696
Balance Requested: US$ US$ 899,696
Geneva, 12 February 2014
During 2013 Chad has been dealing with two new influxes of refugees from the Central African Republic and from Sudan who are fleeing fighting in their countries. More than 20,000 new refugees from CAR have been registered in Chad. They have been accommodated in existing camps and with host communities. Sudanese refugees are fleeing ethnic clashes in West-Darfur. More than 30,000 new Sudanese refugees have been registered and more than 20,000 have been accommodated in a newly established site called Ab Gadam. Due to the continued fighting in both countries further influxes of refugees are foreseen in 2014. Chad was already home to about 290,000 Sudanese refugees and 60,000 Central African Republic refugees before this new influx.
The new arrivals put extra burdens on the host communities who are affected by the degradation of the environment caused by deforestation, over-exploitation of groundwater and pressure on scarce natural resources.
Despite the challenging situation, the Lutheran World Federation-Department for World Service (LWF-DWS) provides, since 2007, support to refugees from neighbouring countries and host communities made possible through a unique combination of ACT members support and UNHCR funding.
DWS Chad is now involved in eleven refugee camps and host communities in different regions of the country. It operates from its N’Djamena office and field offices in Koukou, Farchana, Gaga, Hadjer Hadid, Goz Beida, Ab Gadam, Maro and Goré as well as a liaison staff in Abéché.
Funding raised through the appeal on hand will ensure LWF-ACT’s continued presence in Chad and significantly contribute to a larger LWF humanitarian programme budgeted at over 8 Million USD of which UNHCR will cover 70%. If fully funded, over 265,000 persons will receive direct assistance through the programme (392,488 indirect beneficiaries). The detailed budget (showing the UNHCR contributions) can be provided upon request.
LWF will provide support with: psycho-social, recovery of livelihoods, emergency shelter, NFIs and education.
ACT members based in Chad are: Lutheran World Federation and the Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe.
