Women threatened by ‘Republic of Fear’ in Egypt

by Shanshan Chen | Thomson Reuters Foundation

Women of different backgrounds have increased their participation in Egypt’s political life, but face violence at the hands of the current military government.

Dr Maha Azzam tells Thomson Reuters Foundation that protesters of both sexes were vulnerable when faced by the military coup in Egypt, but that women were often picked on by the military, sometimes as a way of threatening their male relatives.

Dr. Azzam is an associate fellow of Chatham House and Chair of “Egyptians for Democracy UK”, an organisation dedicated to the democratic and sustainable development of Egypt.
