Slum kids confronting sexism in Mumbai

Why don’t boys do housework in Mumbai? Why do girls have to fight for an education? This is the first in an ongoing series about programs that challenge teenagers to re-imageine male and female roles around the world.

The World Economic Forum 2014 Global Gender Gap Index ranked India as 114 out of 142 countries - based on how women fared against men when it came to economic participation and opportunities, educational attainment and health and survival.

We visited a project in Mumbai called GEMS – Gender Equity Movement in Schools, a program of the International Centre for Research on Women - to hear what boys and girls had to say about gender in their own lives, and then followed them home to get their parents' views.
