In December 1984, a toxic gas leak at a pesticide factory in Bhopal killed thousands of people. On the 30th anniversary of the disaster, local activists claim that many of those who were exposed to the gas, or drank contaminated water near the factory, have given birth to children with physical or mental disabilities. The Bhopal Medical Appeal says the parents or grandparents of children treated at a rehabilitation centre it supports have all suffered toxic contamination. There are, however, no medical studies proving the births of children born with disabilities are linked to contamination in the aftermath of the disaster.
