The Kyoto Protocol to combat global warming has notched up what the UN calls ‘an exciting milestone’ – 500 projects under its Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), in effect a ‘swap shop’ where heavy polluters reduce their carbon debts by investing in developing countries. The 500th project is a wind farm in Gujarat, India, which is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 15,300 tonnes annually.
