MIAMI, Oct 13 (Reuters) - Hurricane Paula weakened to a Category 1 hurricane on Wednesday as it headed towards western Cuba, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Paula, the 16th named storm of the busy 2010 Atlantic season and the ninth hurricane, was packing top sustained winds of 85 miles (140 km) per hour, making it a Category 1 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale of intensity.

Its center was located about 45 miles (70 km) west of Cuba's westernmost tip. (Reporting by Miami newsroom)
