KIGALI, Oct 14 (Reuters) - Rwandan police on Thursday arrested Victoire Ingabire, a leading opponent of President Paul Kagame, saying investigations into a former rebel commander facing terrorism charges also implicate her.
Ingabire, outspoken head of the unregistered United Democratic Forces (UDF) party, returned to Rwanda to contest presidential elections this year but was barred from standing after being accused of crimes linked to genocide denial.
The police said in a statement that Ingabire was taken from her home to a police station in the capital Kigali where Major Vital Uwumuremyi, a former commander of the Congolese-based FDLR rebel group, was also being held.
The police said Uwumuremyi had been arrested while trying to slip back into neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo using fake identity papers and faced charges of forming a terrorist organisation known as the Coalition of Democratic Forces.
The charges he faces include buying and distributing arms and ammunitions to the terrorist organisation, and threatening national security and public order, the police said. (Reporting by Kezio-Musoke David; Editing by David Clarke and Louise Ireland)
