MOGADISHU, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Somali gunmen kidnapped a white man working for the British charity Save The Children in central Somalia late on Thursday, local residents said.

Initial reports said the man was from Zimbabwe, although others said he was British. The British Foreign Office said it was aware of the reports and was urgently investigating.

Residents said the gunmen had taken the hostage to an area controlled by al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab rebels. (Reporting by Ibrahim Mohamed and Mohamed Ahmed in Mogadishu and Michael Holden in London; Editing by Richard Lough)
