KHARTOUM, Oct 20 (Reuters) - A British man was fatally wounded in an explosion as he cleared mines from a battle-scarred area of south Sudan, U.N. officials said on Wednesday.

Stephen "Darby" Allan, 52, a former diver with Britain's Royal Navy, died from his wounds a few hours after the blast near the town of Kapoeta, his employer the Mines Advisory Group (MAG) added in a statement.

Remote parts of south Sudan remain littered with mines, unexploded shells and ammunition five years after the end of a decades-long civil war with the north. The explosives have been blamed for scores of deaths and injuries and the problem has become more acute in recent years as refugees return to set up new homes in the oil-producing region.

The head of the U.N. mission in south Sudan, David Gressly, said there would be an investigation into the explosion. (Reporting by Andrew Heavens, editing by Mark Trevelyan)
