Goz Beida, Chad (AlertNet) - Chad called for the withdrawal of MINURCAT early this year citing the U.N. forceÂ?s inability to ramp up to its target number in time and the improved relations between Chad and neighbouring Sudan which had harboured each others rebellions that caused regular security problems in the region.
Humanitarian groups in eastern Chad say the détente in ties between both countries has led to a general drop in tension but acts of banditry including kidnaps have continued and remain a concern even for 262,000 Sudanese refugees, 68,000 others from CAR, as wells as 168,000 internally displaced persons, 48,000 returnees and an estimated 150,000 members of the host communities.
