BRUSSELS, Dec 4 (Reuters) - The International Monetary Fund will work with the Ivory Coast government only if it is recognised by the United Nations, the lender's chief, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, said on Saturday.
The United Nations has refused to recognise incumbent Laurent Gbagbo as the winner of Ivory Coast's presidential election this week, saying that candidate Alassane Ouattara had won the ballot.
"It is quite sure, in practice, the IMF works with recognised governments, recognised by the United Nations," Strauss-Kahn told a conference in Brussels, responding to a question whether the Fund would cooperate with the Ivory Coast.
"The stand of the IMF will be the stand of the United Nations," he said.
