WASHINGTON, Dec 7 (Reuters) - China should play a strong role in making clear to North Korea there are consequences for its actions as the international community seeks to calm tensions on the Korean peninsula, a top State Department official said on Tuesday.

Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg also said that the United States hoped Beijing could increase its domestic demand to become a catalyst for growth, and that better balanced U.S.-China economic ties could benefit both countries. (Reporting by Arshad Mohammed; editing by Anthony Boadle)
