BEIJING, Dec 9 (Reuters) - China said on Thursday that any attempt to put pressure on the country over the issue of jailed Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo would not succeed.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu made the comment at a regular news conference.

China called the award an "obscenity" that should not have gone to a man it calls a criminal, and has exerted diplomatic pressure on countries not to attend Friday's award ceremony in Oslo.

Most of the 18 states that will not attend the ceremony have strong commercial ties with China or share its hostility towards Western human rights pressure. (Reporting by Sui-Lee Wee and Sabrina Mao; Writing by Ben Blanchard; Editing by Ken Wills)
