KABUL, Dec 16 (Reuters) - At least 10 Afghans were feared killed when a roadside bomb hit a minibus in Afghanistan's remote west on Thursday, a provincial government official said.

The roadside bomb hit the minibus carrying civilians in the Kesh-e Kohna district near the border with Turkmenistan, said Shafiq Behroozyan, a spokesman for the governor of Herat province.

He said there had been unconfirmed reports of between 10 and 18 people killed.

"For now we can say that there are casualties from this incident, but for sure we do not know how many have been killed and wounded. But there are casualties," Behroozyan said by telephone from Herat.

Herat is one area where NATO-led foreign troops are hoping to begin handing security responsibility to Afghan forces soon. (Reporting by Sayed Salahuddin; Editing by Paul Tait) (If you have a query or comment on this story, send an email to news.feedback.asia@thomsonreuters.com)
