LOS ANGELES, Jan 20 (Reuters) - George Clooney contracted malaria during a trip to Sudan earlier this month, but is now fully cured, a spokesman for the Oscar-winning actor said onThursday.

Clooney, 49, a frequent visitor to the war-torn nation, was helping draw attention to a historic referendum on independence for residents of the mainly Christian south.

"George is completely over the malaria he contracted while in the Sudan during the first week in January," his spokesman said in a statement.

"This was his second bout with it. This illustrates how with proper medication, the most lethal condition in Africa, can be reduced to a bad ten days instead of a death sentence."

News of Clooney&${esc.hash}39;s illness first broke on Thursday in a Tweet from new CNN chat show host Piers Morgan, who claimed that the star of "Ocean&${esc.hash}39;s Eleven" and "Syriana" was "taking medication but feeling rough."

But Clooney&${esc.hash}39;s spokesman said the interview with Morgan was taped last week, and will air on Friday.
