DAMASCUS, March 24 (Reuters) - Senior opposition figures dismissed on Thursday a committee formed by President Bashar al-Assad in reaction to mass protests in the south of Syria as falling short of the aspirations of the Syrian people.

Top dissidents in Syria and in exile said Assad failed to take immediate measures to meet growing demands to free thousands of political prisoners, allow freedom of expression and assembly and scrap emergency law that govern Syria, giving the security apparatus a free reign.
