KHARTOUM, May 22 (Reuters) - The United Nations Security Council called on the north Sudanese army to withdraw from positions it has taken in the disputed region of Abyei, it said in a statement on Sunday.

The council also condemned south Sudanese forces for attacking a U.N. convoy in Abyei on Thursday, it said in the statement, read to reporters by the French council ambassador.

The United States ambassador to the United Nations called the escalation of the situation in Abyei "quite dangerous." (Reporting by Ulf Laessing)
