KHARTOUM, May 28 (Reuters) - The northern Sudanese army has halted military operations in Abyei after taking full control of the disputed region, state media said on Saturday.

"The armed forces on Saturday announced the end of military operations in Abyei following the full control of the area," the state news agency SUNA said, referring to the northern army.

Abyei was a major battleground in Sudan's last civil war and has symbolic importance for both north and south. The northern army took control of the disputed area last Saturday. (Editing by Andrew Dobbie)
