VIENNA, June 20 (Reuters) - The chief of the United Nations nuclear agency called on Monday for an urgent international response to help address public safety concerns caused by Japan's atomic crisis.

"We need to respond urgently to the public anxiety," Yukiya Amano, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said in a speech to a June 20-24 conference on boosting global nuclear safety.

"An international response is essential," Amano said.
