Senior politician from Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle among eight suspects sentenced

BANGKOK (TrustLaw) – The last of the 26 graft suspects being tried for receiving millions of rupiahs in the appointment of a senior central bank official has been convicted and sentenced to 17 months in jail, the Jakarta Globe reported.

Panda Nababan, a senior politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle was among eight suspects sentenced at two separate trials on Wednesday at the anti-corruption court.

All received 17 months in prison and a 50-million rupiah ($5,845) fine, or three additional months in jail.

The 26 active and former lawmakers were charged with receiving bribes in connection with the election of Miranda Goeltom as the Bank Indonesia senior deputy governor in 2004.

They allegedly received travellers' cheques worth between 150 million rupiah ($16,610) and 1.45 billion rupiah ($160,600) in exchange for nominating Goeltom.

Sentencing for the case began last Thursday.

Goeltom, who has denied any knowledge of the bribes, has so far remained a witness in the case.

A key suspect in the case, Nunun Nurbaeti, is missing.
