ROME, Aug 15 (Reuters) - An armed group abducted an Italian aid worker in the town of Nyala in western Sudan, the Italian foreign ministry and medical aid group Emergency said on Monday.
Francesco Azzara, a 34-year old logistics specialist, was taken from his car while driving to the airport on Sunday at around 5 p.m., Emergency said.
It said Azzara was on his second tour in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state, where Emergency has operated a pediatric centre since July 2010.
The foreign ministry said its crisis unit was working with local authorities, the United Nations mission in Darfur and Emergency but it would not be providing details of the case to minimise problems in securing Azzara's release. (Writing by James Mackenzie; editing by Mark Heinrich)
