FACTBOX-Security developments in Pakistan, Aug 25

Aug 25 (Reuters) - Following are security developments in Pakistan on Thursday at 1520 GMT.

CHAMAN - An unarmed surveillance drone crashed in southwest Pakistan near the Afghan border on Thursday, Pakistani paramilitary officials said.

It was an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) used for surveillance and reconnaissance and crashed in the border town of Chaman, the officials said.

Officials said it was an American drone, but that could not be independently confirmed. Pakistan also operates a small fleet of reconnaissance drones.

The U.S. Predator drone campaign is hugely unpopular in Pakistan, where it is considered a flagrant violation of the country's sovereignty and for its civilian casualties.

The United States has made a series of attacks since 2004 in Pakistan's northwest region as part of its struggle against militancy, killing between 1,650 and 2,588 people, according to the New America Foundation, which tracks drone attacks.
