Plan involves resettling thousands of families from shantytowns - report

Uruguay has announced a $150-million programme to get rid of 676 shantytowns, United Press International has reported.

The plan involves resettling thousands of families living in shantytowns, many of which are located in flood-prone and contaminated land in the capital Montevideo.

It is estimated that between 200,000 to 260,000 Uruguayans live in illegal settlements across the South American country.
