Brazil’s health ministry says nearly 116,000 cases of malaria were reported in the first half of this year, a fall of 31 percent compared with the same period in 2010, the Spanish press agency EFE reported

“The positive figures are the result of comprehensive action, which includes stepping up the routines for early diagnosis and the opportune treatment of patients,” Brazil’s health minister, Alexandre Padilha, said.

The government launched a malaria prevention campaign this week that aims to distribute 1.1 million mosquito nets impregnated with long-lasting insecticide.
