By Anastasia Moloney

BOGOTA (TrustLaw) - Nearly 43,000 children in Brazil aged between 10 and 14 years are married, according to government census figures, the Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper reports.

Child marriage in Brazil is highest among poor communities living in rural areas, the 2010 government census shows.

Brazilian law prohibits marriage to children under 14, but many people are unaware of this, Helen Sanches, head of the Brazilian Association of Judges, Prosecutors and Public Defenders (ABMP), told the paper.
