A truck driver in northern India was beaten to death by four transport officials after he refused to a pay a 5,000 rupee bribe ($100), the Hindustan Times reported on Tuesday.
According to the report, the constables from the regional transport office stopped 55-year-old Anant Kumar Gupta's truck in India's Uttar Pradesh region for a vehicle check, claiming his truck was overloaded and asking that he pay a bribe.
"Despite the fact the truck was not overloaded, the constables demanded 5,000 bribe from my father. When he refused, they thrashed him with sticks and iron rods," Gupta's son, Ashwani, who witnessed the incident, was quoted as saying.
"When my father became unconscious, the constables dumped him in the truck and tried to drive away. But my father died."
Last month, high profile social activist Anna Hazare, 74, went on hunger strike against corruption -- winning the support of tens of thousands of Indians who took to the streets to pressure the government to strengthen anti-graft laws.
