(Johannesburg 14 October 2011) Thomson Reuters Foundation and the GBCHealth Healthy Women, Healthy Economies initiative will lead a journalism training workshop on Women’s and Girls’ Health and Progress Reporting from October 17 – 21 2011 in Johannesburg. The workshop will focus on tools and techniques that journalists can use to effectively cover stories on women’s and girls’ health, as well as other critical issues related to gender equality. Fifteen journalists from across Africa were competitively-selected to participate in the one-week training, and their participation was supported by the U.S. State Department, Office of Global Women’s Issues.

Selected journalists will have the unique opportunity to hear and learn from the workshop’s corporate partners, and government and NGO representatives. Expert presenters will share insights on women’s and girls’ issues and discuss the role of business in promoting women’s and girls’ advancement.

“This workshop is a powerful opportunity for media professionals to receive tools and knowledge that will help them accurately cover the most critical issues facing women and girls in developing countries who don’t yet have full and equal rights to health, and social and economic participation,” said Ilze Melngailis, Vice President of Partnerships and Impact Initiatives for GBCHealth. “By combining exceptional training tools with a thorough examination of the issues, the Thomson Reuters training will help create a cadre of journalists who can become allies in achieving critical improvements for women and girls everywhere.”

Selected journalists include media professionals from Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda, Ghana, South Africa, Botswana, Cameroon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ivory Coast, Malawi, Sudan, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
