Colombia: ICRC facilitates release of abducted girl

We are delighted that Nhora Valentina has been reunited with her family after this painful period of separation, said Adolfo Beteta, an ICRC delegate working in the area. The ICRC was requested by both the girl's family and the armed abductors to take part in the release operation. The ICRC would like to thank all parties for the confidence they placed in the organization, and the Colombian government for facilitating the process. Children are particularly vulnerable in situations of armed conflict. Under international humanitarian law, children affected by hostilities are entitled to special respect and protection and must not be arbitrarily deprived of their liberty. The ICRC has been active in Colombia for 30 years and has regularly helped facilitate the release of persons deprived of their liberty.
