DAKAR (AlertNet) - Floods have destroyed homes and cut off several roads and bridges in Ghana’s capital city of Accra, leaving several residents stranded, media in the West African nation reported on Wednesday.

Torrential rains on Tuesday night caused streams, rivers and blocked drainages to overflow.

“Major roads in the capital including Graphic road and Nkrumah circle have been submerged by the rains preventing workers from getting to their offices,” the Daily Guide newspaper said.

It remains unclear how many people the floods killed as some media put the figure at one while others say five people were killed.

Ghana’s President, John Atta Mills, has visited some of the flood-hit districts of Accra.
