CANBERRA, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Following is a list of Australia's biggest emitters of greenhouse gases, ranked by the amount of carbon each directly releases into the atmosphere a year, according to the latest government data*.

The table also calculates the gross cost of these emissions based on a starting price of A${esc.dollar}23 a tonne. These firms, though, are likely to be awarded significant government compensation to cushion the blow.
