NEW DELHI, Nov 17 (AlertNet) - Afghans have put India amongst their top foreign donors along with the U.S., Germany and Japan in a survey conducted by the Asia Foundation, the Hindustan Times reported on Thursday.
According to the report, Indian aid to its South Asian war-ravaged neighbour has grown over the years to $2 billion from an initial $50 million and is much less than aid given by nations like Britain and Canada.
"When asked to name the big donors, most Afghans cited the US (27 percent), Germany (7 percent), Japan (6 percent) and India (4 percent), ahead of the UK, Canada and even Afghanistan's neighbouring countries like China, Iran and Pakistan," said the report, citing the survey.
India is also helping Afghanistan with infrastructure, building roads and electricity transmission lines, operating hospitals, renovating schools, supplying buses for inner-city transportation and training.
The Asia Foundation, an American charity, interviewed close to 6,500 people in 34 provinces of Afghanistan for the survey which also showed the 73 percent of the respondents expressing satisfaction with President Hamid Karzai.
