Sex for grades is rife in Kenyan universities, according to a new report

NAIROBI (TrustLaw) – Sex for grades is rife in Kenyan universities, according to a new report cited by Thursday’s Daily Nation newspaper.

“There are sex engineered grades whereby a male lecturer will require a student to perform sexual favours before being awarded certain grades,” said the Performance Needs Assessment of the Kenya Health Training System 2011 reportquoted by the newspaper.

“Some instructors requested female students to give in before they are assisted in their work and if the student did not comply, she should be given a failing grade.”

The reports said that male students were harassed by male lecturers who were interested in their girlfriends.

The report called for ‘safe spaces’ for students to anonymously report harassment.

It also called for an end to the practice of forcing pregnant students to drop out of university.
