About 66,000 women are violently killed around the world each year, accounting for approximately 17 percent of total homicides, according to a new publication mapping global violence.
El Salvador ranks first in both femicide and lethal violence in general, “Global Burden of Armed Violence 2011” said. Alongside the Central American country, Guatemala, Jamaica, and South Africa all also report rates of 10 femicides per 100,000 women or above.
Globally, in just under half of the cases the perpetrator is the current or former partner, the study said.
Its suggested steps to counter violence against women include international initiatives to track violence against women, the promotion of surveys to measure violence committed by intimate partners and
strangers, and the development of tools to improve estimates of the effects of violence against women on development.
Men are killed about five times more frequently than women, the Cambridge University Press publication shows, adding that in total at least 526,000 men and women die violent deaths every year. More than three-quarters of these deaths are in non-conflict settings, it added.
