APPEAL
Sudan - Darfur
Norwegian Church Aid Darfur Programme
ACT/CARITAS APPEAL SDN121–EA 30/2011
Appeal Target: US$ 11,643,000 (EUR 8,486,001)
Geneva, 21 December 2011
As we appeal to our member organisations for their support for the NCA Darfur Programme in 2012, it is important to note that this programme is a unique ecumenical cooperation between the ACT Alliance and Caritas Internationalis and an important provider of humanitarian aid and services in Darfur. The programme was established in mid-2004 and has received support from more than 60 member organisations. The three implementing partners in the appeal are Norwegian Church Aid (NCA), an ACT Alliance member under whose auspices the overall programme is managed, Sudanaid the Caritas Internationalis member in Sudan and Sudan Council of Churches (SCC) who is also an ACT Alliance member. In the third quarter of 2011 the programme provided humanitarian support to over 240,000 people in South and West Darfur.
The indicators for 2012 point to mixed messages. Ongoing fighting in other parts of Sudan as well as Darfur suggests further turbulence ahead. There are also some concerns that the country will face high food prices during May- September 2012 due to poor harvests caused by lack of rain in some parts of Sudan and disruptions to agriculture caused by the ongoing conflict in Blue Nile and South Kordofan.
Of particular concern is the risk that Southerners in Northern Sudan face having to leave the North in early 2012. Apart from the human cost this could impact on programme capacity, particularly for the two national partners SCC and Sudanaid. Together with NCA the partners? management has been looking at contingency measures to support each other during this troubling time.
The programme goes into 2012 with activities which include continued support and services in the fields of water and sanitation, health and education to the IDP camps and host communities where the three partners are working.
The programme will also build upon existing livelihoods activities implemented by partners, integrating lessons learned into the shaping of future livelihoods programmes. Livelihoods activities will aim to provide further support to communities, whose traditional livelihoods have been put under immense pressure by what has become a protracted crisis.
The project completion date for this appeal is 31 December 2012 and the target of the appeal is 11,643,000 USD.
