NEWS: STRATEGIES FOR MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH
In many countries, up to 20 percent of children die before their fifth birthday from preventable diseases such as pneumonia, diarrhea, and malaria. In addition, more than 300,000 women die during pregnancy and childbirth each year. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is trying to turn these statistics around with its comprehensive maternal and child survival program.
Access to basic health care can dramatically increase the health of mothers and their babies. UMCOR supports prenatal clinics and clinics for children under the age of five, as well as training events for traditional birth attendants. UMCOR also educates mothers. This program emphasizes four basic health strategies: nutrition, oral rehydration, immunization, and growth monitoring. Read more.
Give to help mothers and their children by contributing to the Maternal and Child Survival Program, UMCOR Advance #982645.
Pray for the Haiti Mission Partners Meeting that is taking place in Orlando, Florida, this week, as they gather to examine new ways to collaborate with the people of Haiti to advance recovery from the January 2010 earthquake there.
Praise for safe travels of UMCOR Global Health Director Shannon Trilli to and from South Sudan where she met with partners to consider more community health programming there.
