Aswat Masriya, an independent Egyptian election news website set up by Thomson Reuters Foundation, will have its content added to a special digital archive on the Egyptian election by the U.S. Library of Congress, the largest library in the world by shelf space and books.

Monique Villa, CEO of the Foundation, said: "We are delighted that the Library of Congress has recognised Aswat Masriya as an important source of news and information for Egyptians during their first democratic presidential election."

Launched in 2011 by the Foundation's media development programme, TrustMedia, Aswat Masriya (meaning vote/voices of Egypt) was created to provide fair, independent and accurate news and information to journalists, voters and the public at large in the run-up to the 2011 and 2012 parliamentary and presidential elections, both in Arabic and English.

The Aswat Masriya website will be used to keep a record of the historic events now defining Egypt's future and will be accessible to researchers across the world.

"We consider your website to be an important part of this collection and the historical record," the library's web archiving team wrote to the Foundation.

Aswat Masriya's contribution to the library's web archives highlights the growing role of the Internet in preserving records of historic events.
