Thomson Reuters Foundation's Egyptian elections news and information website, Aswat Masriya has been selected by the United States Library of Congress to be included in their historic collection of Internet materials related to the 2012 Egyptian Elections.
Monique Villa, the CEO of Thomson Reuters Foundation, said “We are delighted that the Library of Congress has recognised Aswat Masriya as an important source of news and information for Egyptians during their first democratic presidential election.”
Launched in October 2011, the Aswat Masriya project aims to strengthen the Egyptian media through a series of journalism training courses for Egyptian journalists and the Aswat Masriya website. The site provides independent and accurate news and information to both the Egyptian media and public around the 2011 and 2012 parliamentary and presidential elections, both in Arabic and English.
Aswat Masriya will be used by the Library of Congress to keep a record of the historical events that are currently shaping the future of Egypt, which will be accessible to researchers across the world for years to come. In their invitation letter, the Web Archiving team of the Library wrote, "We consider your website to be an important part of this collection and the historical record."
Aswat Masriya’s contribution to the Library’s web archives highlights the growing role of the Internet to preserve records of historic events.
