Documentary tells the story of women victims of acid attack and of the plastic surgeon who's working to reconstruct their faces

SHEFFIELD (TrustLaw) – More than 100 people are disfigured by acid attacks every year in Pakistan, the majority of them being women and girls victims of their husbands or relatives who often walk away unpunished.

And many more cases go unreported as the victims fear their attacker’s retaliation, according to groups working with survivors of this brutal crime.

Zakia, 39, was disfigured by her husband just after filing for divorce. She is among the few lucky ones whose life has been turned around by Dr Mohammad Jawad, a British-Pakistan plastic surgeon who works to reconstruct the faces of acid victims.

TrustLaw interviewed Jawad in February this year, just before “Saving Face” - a documentary about Zakia’s quest to get his help – won the Academy Award for best documentary and on Thursday it was screened at this year's Sheffield Doc/Fest.
