The United States remains the world's largest donor to the United Nations refugee agency

NEW YORK (AlertNet)—The United States remains the world’s largest donor to the United Nations refugee agency and the country that resettles more refugees than any other, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The number of refugees resettled fell by 15 percent globally and by 20 percent in the United States in 2011 compared with 2010. UNHCR said this was due to a variety of factors including new security screening requirements for refugees in the U.S. and volatile security situations in previously welcoming host countries.

Following are the top 10 U.S. cities to resettle refugees in the past decade:

  1. Phoenix, Arizona—14,707 people
  2. Houston, Texas—13,795
  3. Dallas, Texas—9,143
  4. St. Paul, Minnesota—9,136
  5. Minneapolis, Minnesota—8,643
  6. Glendale, California—8,478
  7. Miami, Florida—8,180
  8. Denver, Colorado—8,154
  9. Chicago, Illinois—8,044
  10. San Diego, California—7,910
