When Rev. Cynthia Harvey looked out the window of a small Wings of the Morning airplane on a recent missionary flight from Kamina to Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of Congo, she noted that for a long while, “as far as the eye could see, there were no roads.”
Harvey, head of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), was on her way to a roundtable meeting with other United Methodist leaders. More often than not, Wings of the Morning passengers are not so “healthy and whole” as she but people in dire need of medical attention.
“I imagined what it would be like to be in labor, or to be in a complicated labor, and have to get to the hospital. To be transported in one and a half hours by plane rather than two days by car, literally can make all the difference in someone’s world,” said Harvey.
The Wings of the Morning program is part of the aviation ministry of the North Katanga Conference and is supported by the General Board of Global Ministries and UMCOR. It provides transportation for hospitals, educators, mission teams, church leaders and other mission needs.
Recently, the West Ohio Conference of The United Methodist Church raised an amazing one million dollars in the course of its annual conference to help Wings of the Morning purchase a larger airplane. The outcome was deemed “a miracle” by the conference.
The new Cessna Caravan will have double the seating capacity, from four to eight, of the current model and, so, over time will help many more people.
Additional support is needed, though. Fuel and maintenance for these planes are costly, and the high demand often exceeds the resources available.

Pray for families facing severe flooding in Minnesota and Wisconsin and for the volunteers and all those who are helping them.
Pray also for the family of Rev. Charlene F. Gaspar, who passed away earlier this month. She was an avid UMCOR supporter, who became well known for auctioning her vast postcard collection on eBay to raise funds for UMCOR’s response to the South Asia Tsunami in December 2004.

UMCOR is a partner in this initiative, along with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the construction firm Miyamoto International. They offer knowledge and hands-on training in building methods, especially techniques for greater protection against disaster, to more than 4,200 skilled workers and homeowners.
