The agency, the State Committee for Women, Children and Family Affairs, had asked Counterpart’s program in Azerbaijan, the Women’s Participation Program, to help civil servants improve their professional skills in managing their work and planning. The training began in July for 25 agency employees, who attended two three-day sessions each. More sessions are scheduled.
“I received a lot of positive feedback from the trainees, especially from our regional family support center representatives,” said Sabina Manafova, head of the agency’s International Relations Department. “I have been approached by several employees, who have stressed the necessity of continuing this training series.”
The agency develops policy on women and children in Azerbaijan and implements it through a series of regional centers. Much of its work is funded by the United Nations Development Program, the European Union and other donors.
The Women’s Participation Program is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development. It works with 13 civil society groups as well as the Azerbaijani government to improve the status of women by raising public awareness on issues that affect them and empowering them to engage in the political process. The two-year program provides technical assistance to the government agency for women and helps with awareness, advocacy and women’s leadership development across Azerbaijan.
