KINSHASA, Sept 13 (Reuters) - An outbreak of Ebola in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo was not under control and the number of people killed by the disease has more than doubled to 31 in the past week, the World Health Organisation said on Thursday.

"The epidemic is not under control ... On the contrary the situation is very, very serious," Eugene Kabambi, a spokesman for WHO in Kinshasa told Reuters by telephone.

The disease has stricken people in the towns of Isiro and Viadana in Orientale province. (Reporting by Jonny Hogg; Writing by Richard Valdmanis; Editing by David Lewis)
